School can present challenges for many children with ADHD because ADHD symptoms include difficulty with attention regulation, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, which can affect planning, organizing, and managing behaviors.
Students whose ADHD causes them to have reduced efficiency in school work and to be adversely affected by their educational performance very likely need special education services that are provided through an Individual Education Plan (IEP).
A student's performance in the educational environment can be measured by grades, test scores, behavior, socialization, communication, work completion, work quality, attendance, and other such metrics. A student can be performing excellently academically; but, their performance can be adversely affected by their behavior or ability to complete work and stay on task.
School officials often times mistakenly determine that a student with ADHD is not eligible for an IEP because they fail to adequately consider the eligibility criteria. Often, school officials often only grant 504 Plans for students with ADHD; however, in our experience, most students with 504 Plans also qualify for and need an Individual Education Plan.
